There are a number of factors that affect grain storage capacity, including building type, method of loading, endwall bracing kits and type of grain being stored and its moisture content. Whether you’re storing barley, corn, oats, alfalfa, wheat or other grains, it’s important to consider details such as pounds per cubic feet and pounds per bushel to ensure your grain is being stored properly.

Remember, improperly stored grain may cause your building to deform or buckle. Follow our guidelines to make sure this does not happen.

Here are some important things to keep in mind when storing grain:

  • Do not modify the arches of your building as this will weaken the structure

  • No grain should touch endwalls unless the endwalls are properly reinforced

  • Avoid use of skylights in any section of building to be used as grain storage

  • Grain should only be loaded from peak to balance pressure on both sides of the building

  • Grain should be unloaded from center first, then in equal amounts from both sides to keep grain quantities balanced

  • Grain aeration should be applied through a system of fans and ducts in or on the floor—do not cut holes in arches!
